(阅读理解题)Telephone, television, radio, and telegragh all help people communicate with each other. Because of these devices, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example , within second , people can know the results of an election in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set. News of a disaster such as an earthquake or a flood can bring help from distant countries. Within hours, help is on the way. Because of modern technology like the satellites that travel around the world , information travels fast. How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people , the world has become smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago , communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the oceans. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach Americas. This time difference influenced people. s action. For example , one battle , or fight , in the War of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England , but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During the six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace treaty had been signed. They would not have died if news had come in time. In the past , communication took much more time than it does now. President of the United States twice in his life. He met with a lot of trouble when he tried to continue to be President for the second time because the war was not going well for the north, and Lincoln almost lost the support of most Americans, for the war had lasted for nearly four years. Most Americans wanted to get peace very much, and they were tired of the war. Just at that time, another candidate whose name was Meclellane promised the Americans peace at any price. Lincoln didn’t think it possible for himself to be president once more. One night in August, he wrote in his diary: “It seems very probable that my government will lose this election.” But he had forgot his friendship with Thomas Nast, who had always been his firm supporter and who was very good at drawing cartoons. Just as Meclellane was getting more and more support from the people, Nast drew many wonderful cartoons that were published in newspapers. The cartoons showed the Americans that Meclellane was a man who would give in to the south, and he would serve the southern slave owners like their running dog. It was not long before the Americans realized that only Abraham Lincoln was able to lead them to Victory and build a better America. (1). Recycling is a safe, less costly solution to the problem of waste disposal. It reduces the amount of solid waste taken to landfills and thereby decreases the amount of water and air pollution. One of the most important reasons for recycling is to preserve natural resources. Archimedes was a famous Greek mathematician and scientist. He was born around 287 BC, and he died in the year 212 BC. Archimedes is most well known for one specific idea that he came up with. “Archimedes’s Principle” states that a solid object which is immersed in a liquid is pushed up by a force which is equal to the weight of the water that the object displaces (or moves). For example, if you put a piece of wood and a piece of gold the same size in water, only the wood will float. Both the wood and gold displace the same amount of water, but the wood weighs less than this water, while the gold weighs more. It is believed that Archimedes discovered this principle when the king of Syracuse asked him to solve a problem. The king wanted to know if his crown was pure gold or a mixture of gold and silver. The king, of course, did not want to melt his crown to find out. The idea came to Archimedes as he lowered himself into his bath. He noticed how the water spilled out of the tub. He decided to use the same idea for the crown. He knew that a gold crown immersed in water would weigh more than one made of silver. The experiment was done and the goldsmith was proved guilty of trying to trick the king. (1). (单选题) Archimedes solved a royal problem for the kind of __________. Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive (主管的) circle, beauty can become a liability. Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required. This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, " says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates (候选人). She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes. (1). (1). PASSAGE ONE Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. (1).
