Have a Good Think
You want to keep young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise, and as a result, we are getting old soon.
Professor Taiju Matsuzawa at Tokyo National University wanted to find out why quite healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a rather early age, and how the speed of getting old could be slowed down. With a team of researcher, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and different jobs.
Computer technology enabled the researched to get most exact measurements ofthe volume of the front and side parts of the brain, which have something to do with intellect and feeing, and decide the human character. As we all know, the back part of the brain, which controls tasks like eating and breathing, does not contract with age.
Contraction of front and side parts----as cells die off----seen in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty----and seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to prevent the contraction----using the head.
The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. “Those with least possibility,” said Matsuzawa, “are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing the same work day after day in government offices are, however, as likely to have contracting brain as farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants”.

My Chocolate
Last Thursday, after doing all the family shopping in the town, I wanted a rest before catching the train, so I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went to the station coffee shop—that cheap, self-service place with long tables to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to keep a place and went to get a cup of coffee.
When I came back with a cup of coffee, there was someone in the next seat. It was one of those customers—a young man, with dark glasses and torn clothes and hair colored bright red at the front. Not so unusual these days. What did surprise me was that he’d started to eat my chocolate.
Naturally, I was annoyed. However, to avoid trouble—really I was rather uneasy about him—I just looked down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee and took a bit of chocolate. The boy looked at me closely. Then he took a second piece of my chocolate. I would hardly believe it. Still I didn’t dare to start an argument. When he took a third piece, I felt more angry than uneasy. I thought, “Well, I shall have the last piece” and I got it
The boy gave me a strange look, and then stood up. As he left he shouted out, “This woman is mad!” Everyone stared. That was embarrassing enough, but it was worse when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave. My face went red——as red as his hair when I realized I’d made a mistake. It wasn’t my chocolate he’d been taking. There was mine, unopened, just under my newspaper.

How to Make Use of the Power of Work Stress
What should you say when you are under work pressure, “stressed out and frantic” or “challenged and energized”? There’s very little physiological difference between the two, says a growing number of experts who think that work stress is positive. These experts believe that stress can strengthen you or tear you down. In most situations, you can choose. Here are some ways to do better under pressure.
Give stress a good name
Why resent work stress----it shows that your work is improving. Think of a heavy work as chance to push yourself and learn new skills. Tell yourself, “This is a challenge I am able to deal with.”
Alternate your work
Working a whole day or week for the most important project increases your anxiety without improving your productivity---in fact, you may lose focus. Every 60to 90 minutes, take a break from your work and do something different for 15 minutes. If you have been reading at your desk, walk into someone’s office to talk over on another project. Do not worry about breaking your concentration. You will return to your work energized and determined.
Shake a leg
Regular exercise is very important to stress control and mini exercise during the day can release pent-up energy. Most people pay little attention to some exercise which you can actually do every day, such as walk to your or someone’s office instead of taking the elevator; stand up and stretch your back and neck muscles while you are on the phone, and so on.
Spend time with your friend
During high-pressure periods, do not lock yourself in a room with your work. Talking with friends, getting together with people who make you laugh and change your opinion, will energize and inspire you. You want positive social support, so tell your friends about your progress and ask them for advice and encouragement.
