But, when British Rail offered him an all-expenses-paid birthday trip to the capital, he just could not refuse. Until yesterday he had never been far from home, except for one trip to Aberdeen. Mr. Evans’, who spent 60 years working as a miner in South Wales, almost made the journey to London once before, at the turn of the century. “There was a trip to the White City but it was ten shillings (1 shilling=1/20 pound) return from Swansea—too much I thought. All my money went to the family then,” he said. During the next two days Mr. Evans will be taken on a whistle-stop tour of London to see the sights. Top of his list is a visit to the Houses of Parliament.(国会) The only arrangement he does not care for is the wheelchair provided to move his about if he gets tired. 阅读理解 In international trade, people buy and sell goods and then send them from one country to another. It can be a very risky business. If the goods are lost or damaged or if delivery does not take place as scheduled for some other reasons, the climate of confidence between the parties may deteriorate to the point where a lawsuit I launched. Nevertheless, the seller and the buyer in international transactions want their deal to be successfully completed. Frequently, the parties to international transaction are not aware of the different trading practice in their counterpart’s country. This can give rise to misunderstanding, disputes and even litigation, causing waste of time and money. In order to avoid these problems and reduce to the minimum the uncertainties of different interpretations of the trade terms, the International Chamber of Commerce prepared and published in1936 a set of international rules, that is, International Rules for the Incoterms of Trade Terms(Incotems for short), and the interpretation of the most commonly unused trade terms. Since 1936, the Incoterms have been revised several times to take account of changes in transportation techniques and to render them fully compatible with the new developments in electronic data interchange. Amendments and additions were made in 1953, 1967, 1976, 1980 and 1990 in order to bring the rules in line with current international trade practices. Now the Incoterms are presented in a new format with allows both the seller and the buyer to follow a step-by-step process to determine their respective rights andobligations and the new layout makes Incoterms 1990 easier to use. If when preparing their contract, both the seller and the buyer specifically refer to one of the Incoterms, they can be sure of defining their respective responsibilities simply and safely. In doing so, they can eliminate any possibility of misunderstanding and subsequent disputes. The Incoterms having been amended several times, have become a very useful guideline in international trade and thus fostered greatly in expansion. Choose the best answer based on Part C (1). They make a fuss over(对……关怀备至)the children in the family, show off to their friends the achievements(成就)of this child or that child, and show countless pictures of new babies. Grandfathers can fix anything, and grandmothers always have homemade biscuits around. When you are small,it is fun to stay with your grandparents because they always let you do things you can.t do at home, and of course, they buy you things. They are always able to baby-sit(临时照看婴儿)because they don.t go out much and actually prefer to see their grand-children. They are usually good for a small loan(借款)now and then that does not need to be paid back because they turned it into a gift. You respectfully listen to their advice but do not follow it because they are old and do not understand how things are in this day and age. You thank them politely for what they do for you,and then do not call or visit them until you need something else. And,of course, you never tell them how dear they are to you because they know how you feel about them anyway. 阅读理解 My grandfather came from Hungary and was the only one in his family who settled down in the United States. The rest of his family remained in Europe. When World War I broke out, he seemed to have become another man, downhearted. Such obvious change was not born out of concern for his welfare, but out of fear: if his only son,my uncle, had to go to war,it would be cousin fighting against cousin. One day in 1918,my uncle Milton received his draft notice. My grandparents were very upset. But my mother,at the age of10, felt on top of the world about her soldier brother going off to war. Realizing how he was regarded by his little sister and all of her friends,my uncle bought them all service pins, which meant that they had a loved one in the service. All the little girls were delighted. The moment came when my uncle and the other soldiers, without any training hut all in uniforms, boarded the train. The band played and the crowd cheered. Although no one noticed, I am sure my grandmother had a tear in her eye for the only son. The train slowly pulled out,but not about a thousand yards when it suddenly paused. Everyone stared in wonder as the train slowly returned to the station. There was a(lead silence before the doors opened and the men started to step out. Someone shouted,“The war is over!”For a moment, nobody moved, but then the people heard someone bark orders al the soldiers. The men lined up in two lines, walked down the steps, and with the band playing, marched down the street,as returning heroes,to be welcomed home.
