Passage 1 In the last 500 years, nothing about people - not their clothes, ideas, or languages - has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500.s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today. The potato is also from the new world. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “potato famine” of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their motherland and move to America. There are many other foods that have traveled from South American to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world.s largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia, a country in Africa. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400.s. According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a person named Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the wide-awake feeling that one-third of the world.s population now starts the day with. 1.According to the passage, which of the following has changed the most in the last 500 years? Passage 2 Laptop computers(便携式电脑)are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, at airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their work place. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classroom. Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do school work anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are a part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 11-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast food restaurant or under trees - anywhere at all. Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education such as colleges and universities is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too. At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff uses the computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. Passage 3 One way that scientists learn about man is by studying animals, such as mice and monkeys. The scientists in this laboratory are experimenting on mice. They are studying the relationship between diet and health. At this time, over one hundred experiments are being done in this laboratory. In one of these experiments, the scientists are studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the same healthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eating two cups, and the third group of mice is eating three cups. After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice. But they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another, and using the equipment in their cages. Also, they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years. Most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years. The second group of mice is normal weight. They are healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. But they are only living about two years, not the three years or more of the thinner mice. The last group of mice is receiving more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping. They are not very active. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought - about a year and a half. But they aren.t as healthy. They.re sick more often than the other two groups. 11.The scientists in the laboratory are studying the relationship between ______. Passage 4 Cultural differences in business entertaining include issues such as whom one entertains and where, and how one entertains. In countries in which status is important, it is not advisable to invite people of different statuses(身份、地位)to the same dinner party. Americans will often invite people to their homes. Whereas in some societies the home is considered too private, unworthy, or embarrassingly small to serve as an appropriate forum for business entertaining. In some countries there is a "help yourself" approach to entertaining done in the home. This approach does not work well when entertaining people whose culture teaches them to wait to be asked three times before accepting an offer of food. In one instance, a Chinese guest spent an entire evening without eating though he was quite hungry because he was too embarrassed to take food after only being asked to do so once. In another case, an American woman executive was being entertained at tea in London. After having the tea served, the American woman helped herself to cream and sugar rather than waiting to be served. The English woman was embarrassed by the implication that she was not serving quickly enough. 16.It is no good inviting people of different social positions to the same party in the country where ______. Passage 5 Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one.s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one.s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London . An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight.s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night. 21.Which of the following statements is NOT true? ____________ A、 Many nature lovers, though working in London , prefer to live outside the city. A、 renting a small flat without a garden. B、 having a small flat with a garden C、 Buying a small flat without a garden. D、 getting a small flat with a garden 23.When the garden is in blossom, the one has been rewarded. A、 Having been digging, planting and watering. B、 Having spent time working in the garden. C、 Having a garden of his own. D、 living in the country. 24.People who think happiness lies in the city life would feel that if they had to live outside London . A、 their life was meaningless. If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A well-known scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1937), concluded from other men.s work and his own among people in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer. Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man.s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking! 1. Huntington based his conclusions on ___________. A、 : records of temperature changes B、 : work with people in different climates C、 : all of the above D、 : records of change in his own intelligence 2. Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have _________. A、 : a great effect on everyone.s intelligence B、 : no effect on people.s intelligence C、 : effect on only a few people.s intelligence D、 : some effect on most people.s intelligence 3. One possible reason why spring is the best season for thinking is that ___________. A、 : it is neither too warm nor too cold B、 : there are some things making all nature different from before C、 : it is more natural for the development of mental abilities D、 : it lasts longer than the other seasons 4. The two best seasons for thinking seem to be _____________. A、 : winter and summer B、 : spring and fall C、 : summer and spring D、 : fall and winter 5. According to the passage above, vacations from thinking should be taken ___________. A、 : during spring and fall B、 : several times throughout the year C、 : as seldom as possible D、 : during the summer
Regular child care provided outside the home or by someone other than the mother does not in itself undermine healthy emotional connections between mothers and their 15-month-old infants, according to a long-term national study. The finding holds even if care begins during the first 3 months after birth and runs for 30 hours or more per week. Among infants who receive unkind and unresponsive care from their mothers, however, the mother-child relationship may be damaged. "This research helps us put apart complexities regarding child care that have not previously been studied in detail," contends Jay Belsky, a psychologist. The investigation consists of 1,153 children and their families living in or near Boston. The youngsters, no more than 1 month old when they entered the study in 1991, will be tracked until the age of 7. Experimenters administered questionnaires to mothers in their homes and videotaped baby caretakers interacting with the kids at ages 1, 6, and 15 months. Independent observers rated the quality of each child care efforts and noted infant nervousness. Unlike most previous studies, this one allows researchers to observe each caretaker.s personality at child nursing, and kids. emotional reaction by the equipment. 1. From the first paragraph we know that______. A、 : regular child care outside home may play a role as a mother B、 : mother care is the best according to a national study C、 : connections between mothers and infants are damaged by outside care D、 : child care outside home is the best in accordance with the study 2. According to the passage, unresponsive care from a mother may______. A、 : injure a baby.s emotional reaction B、 : spoil a child.s personality C、 : ruin a kid.s growth D、 : harm the mother-child tie 3. Jay Belsky implies that the study of child care______. A、 : was never carried out in the past B、 : was not much done in detail in the past C、 : was interesting, but very difficult to make discovery D、 : was greatly ignored by psychologists and researchers 4. The main difference between the investigation and the previous ones is that______. A、 : the researchers started with only one month old infants B、 : video equipment enabled researchers to observe what was happening directly C、 : the researchers were able to give the questionnaires to mothers in their homes D、 : the observers could rate the quality of child care efforts and analyzed them soon 5. Which of the following is not TRUE of the investigation? A、 : Researchers paid site visits to see a caretaker.s personality and kids. emotional reaction. B、 : Cooperation from the mothers is also necessary. C、 : Some independent observers play a part. D、 : It will last at least 7 years.
After a 300 million yuan renovation project, Lidai Diwang Miao, or the Imperial Temple of Emperors of Successive Dynasties, was reopened to the public last weekend. Originally constructed about 470 years ago, during the reign of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty, the temple was used by emperors of both the Ming and Qing to offer sacrifices to their ancestors. It underwent two periods of renovation in the Qing Dynasty, during the reigns of emperors Yongzheng and Qianlong. From 1929 until early 2000, it was part of Beijing No. 159 Middle School. For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world.s greatest writer. Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him:that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge of his work. All of us use words and phrases from Shakespeare.s writings that have become a part of the English-speaking people. Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner (or an Englishman!) to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare uses it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners), even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare.s day. 1.
